Nurses for the Rights of the Child

An Update

  • Chapter

Abstract

In the fall of 1993, after a long internal struggle with our consciences, we decided that we could no longer assist with infant circumcision. In October of that year, we wrote a letter to the staff and administration at St. Vincent Hospital, Santa Fe, New Mexico where we work, stating that we would no longer participate in infant circumcision: “Ethically, we find ourselves unable to assist with the procedure.” Twenty-two other nurses at the hospital joined us in signing the letter and in refusing to take part in infant circumcision. Our actions resulted in media attention, including a documentary by Barry Ellsworth, The Nurses of St. Vincent: Saying No to Circumcision.
