Abstract
Sooner or later, vintners will encounter the term enology, which is sometimes spelled in the British version as oenology. In either case, it is best simplified by its Greek origin of oinos (wine) and logos (logic). Wine logic is based on the application of analysis, equipment, materials, and technology in designed methodologies to achieve predetermined results. Enology is constructed upon a gastronomic art form—heavily supported by the disciplines of biochemistry, microbiology, and mechanical engineering. A modern-day winemaker is often referred to as an enologist.
