Abstract

We have surveyed major recent developments in concurrency control methods, with the emphasis on high-performance, high-contention transaction processing environments, and provided a self-complete description of locking, optimistic, and hybrid methods, which combine locking and optimistic methods. We summarized conclusions of previous simulation and analytic results regarding the performance characteristics of concurrency control methods, with emphasis on their relative performance. Analytical solution methods for evaluating the performance of standard locking, restart-oriented locking methods, and optimistic concurrency control methods were also outlined.
