Abstract

The Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, consists of groups of islands: the Okinawa islands (143,322 ha). On Kume island nearby Okinawa island, an experimental melon fly eradication project was started in 1972 using SIT. After its successful eradication from Kume island (Iwahashi, 1977), a large scale project to eradicate the melon fly from the Okinawa prefecture was started (Kakinohana, 1982). During the first step, the subproject was started in the Miyako islands in 1984 and the melon fly was successfully eradicated in 1987 with SIT. In the Okinawa islands the eradication project was begun in 1986.
