Abstract
Few illnesses, if any, have had a greater impact on the American family than alcoholism and other drug dependencies. Alcohol and drug abuse is reported to be among the top economic and health problems in the United States. Traditional mortality indicators fail to document the extensive impact on both the family and the Community when a death occurs prematurely as a result of substance abuse or addiction.
