Abstract

In the Virginia study,1 of 567 diagnoses that were noted in over 500,000 patient encounters with family physicians, disorders of the blood and hematopoietic system were 29th (irondeficiency anemia), 112th (other anemias), 153rd (megaloblastic anemia), 189th (leukemia), and 240th (lymphadenopathy). Every family physician daily Orders and reviews complete blood counts looking for anemias, white cell responses to possible infection, platelet abnormalities, etc. Every physical examination checks for the presence of enlarged lymph nodes and possible hepatosplenomegaly.
