Abstract
In fly-by missions of unmanned space probes the major planets, up to and including Saturn, have been observed at close range. In addition, Venus and Mars have been observed from artificial satellites over longer periods of time, and soft-landing probes have been sent and have observed their atmospheres and surfaces. As we expected, our knowledge of the planets has been greatly improved by means of space flight. In addition, in recent years there have been many surprises and amazing results. Such has also been the case for earthbound astronomy; for example, the recent discovery of the rings of Uranus and a satellite of Pluto.
