Radiation-Induced Cross-Linking of DNA and Protein in Bacteria

Abstract

The cross-linking of DNA and protein was the first in vivo photochemical hetero-addition reaction to be reported (Smith, 1962; Alexander and Moroson, 1962). It was observed that with increasing fluences of UV radiation, decreasing amounts of DNA free of protein could be extracted from the irradiated cells (Fig. 1). The DNA that was unextractable was found in the insoluble protein fraction (Smith, 1962).
