Abstract
Stretched networks of trans-polyisoprene (or gutta percha) exhibit interesting stress-temperature profiles as temperature passes through the crystallization zone.1 Upon cooling, stress turns sharply downward, then climbs back to a high level as temperature continues to fall, Subsequent reheating causes the stress to fall precipitously to a negative value, then after an interval of several degrees ascend steeply back into the positive domain as melting is completed. It is generally believed that the heating phase of the cycle produces a stress-temperature profile more indicative of equilibrium conditions.
