Abstract

Long flexible polymers constitute physical systems with many internal degrees of freedom. At large enough scales, various molecular properties exhibit universal behavior such as the radius of gyration Rg which scales as Mν, where M is the molecular mass and ν is an universal exponent (see also lecture notes by R.C. Ball). Similarely the diffusion coefficient D of linear chains scales with D~Mν in dilute solutions while in melts this relation is altered to D ~ M−2 /1–3/.
