Summary
Research is being undertaken to develop both single transducers and arrays to operate at frequencies of up to 200 kHz in air. An ultrasonic range measuring system has been constructed utilizing two proprietary ranging systems interfaced to a microcomputer. The system operates between 130 mm and 10 m and has a range resolution of approximately 0.05 mm at distances up to 500 mm. The paper describes this system and work undertaken to improve its repeatability. It then proceeds to discuss work carried out on its use as a sensor both alone and in conjunction with a vision system.
