B-1 Cost/Weight Trade Methodology

Abstract

Recommendations for the materials and construction for the B-1 airframe structure were determined on the basis of cost/weight trade studies. This represents an intensive evaluation of competitive materials and fabrication techniques that are feasible for use on this airframe within the constraints of the time period and performance requirements of the air vehicle. Titanium alloys were selected for major structural components comprising approximately 20 percent of the total airframe weight. These areas are indicated in figure 1.
