The Transfer of Immunity with Macrophage RNA

  • Chapter

Abstract

The origin of the currently accepted doctrine that interplay between more than one type of cell is involved in the induction of the immune response can be traced to descriptions a decade ago of the transfer of immunity with RNA-rich extracts from cells exposed for short periods of time to antigen (Fishman, 1961; Fishman and Adler, 1963). This ancestry is peculiarly ironic in that the interpretation of those early experiments as a cooperative effect is more suspect now than then, albeit a considerable number of investigators have since taken up the gauntlet.
