Genetic Manipulation of Photosynthetic Prokaryotes

Photosynthetic Prokaryotes

Part of the book series: Biotechnology Handbooks ((BTHA,volume 6))

Abstract

The phototrophic bacteria have provided fascinating experimental models for the study of a wide range of biochemical topics. Obviously, their photosynthetic capabilities and ancillary phenomena such as the biogenesis of photosynthetic membranes and biosynthesis of tetrapyrroles and carotenoids have attracted the most attention. The metabolic diversity of these bacteria, which between the cyanobacteria and purple bacteria encompass photosynthesis, fermentation, dinitrogen fixation, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, hydrogen uptake, carbon dioxide fixation, and cellular differentiation, provides an array of interesting problems for physiologists and biochemists.

Dr. Hunter’s contribution to this chapter was written in August 1989. A number of new developments in the field of genetic manipulation of photosynthetic prokaryotes have occurred since that time.
