Abstract
Protein chemists have long been interested in changing the chemical, physical, and biological properties of proteins by chemically altering their structure. In recent years, the application of modern knowledge of proteins and the uses of new chemical reagents and more sophisticated analytical techniques have made chemical modifications of proteins a major tool in protein chemistry (Hirs and Timasheff, 1972a; Means and Feeney, 1971). But, even with the availability of modern procedures, purification and analysis of the chemically modified products still remain as formidable tasks in using chemical modification in protein chemistry.
