Abstract
The geology of Alaska bordering the Arctic Ocean can be visualized as a succession of depositional episodes separated by distinct tectonic or orogenic events that leave identifiable patterns in the geologic framework of the northern third of the state (Fig. 1). These six episodes are: (1) Recent to early Cretaceous, including the Gubik and Sagavanirktok Formations, the Colville and Nanushuk Groups, the Fortress Mountain Formation, Torok Formation, Okpikruak Formation, and Bathtub Graywacke; (2) Jurassic through early Permian, including the Kingak Shale, Shublik Formation, Ivishak Formation, Echooka Formation, and Siksikpuk Formation; (3) Middle Pennsylvanian through early Mississippian, including various carbonate units of the Lisburne Group, the Kayak Shale, and the Kekiktuk Conglomerate; (4) Upper and Middle Devonian, including the Kanayut Conglomerate, Hunt Fork Shale, and associated Frasnian units, and unnamed Middle Devonian sandstone and limestone units; (5) Middle and early Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician, and Cambrian, including the Skajit Limestone, Nanook Limestone, Katakturuk Dolomite, and unnamed early Paleozoic formations; and (6) Precambrian, including the Neruokpuk Quartzite and several unnamed Upper Precambrian sedimentary units in northeasternmost Alaska.
