Abstract
Nomenclature for mycobacterial diseases other than tuberculosis and leprosy has not been entirely satisfactory and has varied considerably. The etiological organisms have been called anonymous, atypical, nontuberculous, opportunistic, and unclassified; the diseases they cause have been given names such as mycobacteriosis, pseudotuberculosis, and tuberculosis caused by a specified organism. To borrow a phrase from the review by Wolinsky,(44) “None of the proposed names is without criticism, but the most appropriate and least offensive, in my opinion, is nontuberculous mycobacteriosis.”
Keywords
- Mycobacterial Infection
- Nontuberculous Mycobacterium
- Mycobacterial Antigen
- Mycobacterial Disease
- Atypical Mycobacterium
