Use of Squirrel Monkeys in Cardiovascular Research

Abstract

Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) have been the most widely used of the New World monkeys in cardiovascular research. The majority of the cardiovascular research done with squirrel monkeys has concerned atherosclerosis both as it occurs naturally in these animals and with regard to the effect of diet on the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. Of the several subspecies of squirrel monkeys, Brazilian-type squirrel monkeys have been used almost exclusively in the research on atherosclerosis. To a somewhat lesser extent, squirrel monkeys have been used to study behavioral influences on hypertension, myocardial necrosis, and cholelithiasis as a complication of unsaturated fat diets. In this review, we summarize naturally occurring atherosclerosis, the effects of dietary manipulations on atherosclerosis progression, the effects of physiological and psychological manipulations on diet-induced atherosclerosis, the complications of atherosclerosis, stress-induced myocardial disease, behaviorally induced hypertension, and, finally, some of the diseases that complicate the use of squirrel monkeys in cardiovascular research.
