Abstract

The attempt to define a unique chemistry of malignant growth has been stimulated in recent years by progress in the chemical methodology available to examine both cell products and the genetic codes for their production. Immunochemistry has provided a powerful set of methods and a conceptual framework with which to begin to understand cancer. However, as is usual for the early stages of understanding in any area, dogma has impeded progress. Thus, the failure over six decades to define a chemical pathology of cancer in terms of an immune theory, which Ehrlich formulated at the beginning of the century, or any other theory led to the dictum that since no unique cancer chemistry had been found, it did not exist.
