Molecular Events in Lymphocyte Activation: Role of Nonhistone Chromosomal Proteins in Regulating Gene Expression

Abstract

The resting small lymphocyte and the plasma cell have the same genetic complement, but phenotypically they are at opposite ends of the spectrum of metabolic activity. Both the transformation from B lymphocyte to antibody producer and the transformation from T lymphocyte to effector cell (producing one of a multitude of factors of varying specificities and functions) are initiated by a binding event at the cell surface, which is followed approximately 24 hr later by the onset of DNA synthesis and the morphological changes we term blastogenesis. In the ensuing differentiation to plasma cell or T effector cell, memory cells are also created that can respond more rapidly to a second encounter with the same antigen.
