Abstract

We have recently witnessed how efficiently a genetic region even as large as the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the mouse can be studied for structure and function using the powerful tools of molecular biology. The rapid progress was dependent, however, on the vast amount of genetic, serologic, biochemical and functional information that had been accumulated for the MHC genes over the past fifty years since their discovery by Peter Gorer (1936). In particular due to the availability of large numbers of inbred, congenic and recombinant congenic mouse strains (Snell, 1981) molecular genetic studies have advanced more rapidly for the mouse MHC as compared to man (for reviews see: Hood et al., 1983; Steinmetz and Hood, 1983; Möller, 1985a, b and c; Flavell et al., 1986; Klein, 1986).
