Physical and Mental Growth Controlling for Social Background

  • Chapter
Human Growth and Development

Abstract

Several researchers have speculated about a relationship between the parallel secular trends in physical and mental growth (e.g. Tanner, 1961, 1962, 1978; Muuss, 1970; Husén, 1974). Comparisons have been made between similar groups of children or young adults during different periods of time and even if not always expected, an increase in mental ability has been detected. An overview of investigations made on this topic in England, Scotland, U.S.A., France and Sweden has been made by Husén (1974), who concludes that “Considering our present knowledge a decline in mean intellectual performance is not in sight, on the contrary it seems to rise”.
