Ventilatory Thresholds as an Estimate of Cardiorespiratory Performance Capacity in Children with Congenital Heart Disease

  • Chapter
Book cover Human Growth and Development

Abstract

With increasing oxygen uptake (\(\dot \nabla \)O2) an exercise intensity has been shown in adults at which a non-linear increase in pulmonary ventilation (\(\dot \nabla \) E) occurs. This ventilatory threshold (VT) has been considered an indirect indicator for the onset of metabolic acidosis (Wasserman et al., 1973). This VT was also found in healthy children during graded exercise (Reybrouck et al., 1982). The present study investigates whether this VT can also be demonstrated in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and, if so, whether it can be used as an index of physical performance capacity.
