Abstract
A novel pulse-shortening behavior in traveling wave degenerate two-photon amplification has been theoretically demonstrated for long pulses. [1] Here we describe a corresponding pulse-shortening effect [2,3] in ultrashort pulse propagation in an ideal two-photon medium. The previous result [2,3] will be extended and applied to the 1S–2S two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen. It appears that subpicosecond pulses may be generated through this medium with slight extension of current technology.
