Abstract

The class of optical coherence effects which are now accessible by laser techniques permit new ways of studying dynamic interactions in atoms, molecules, and solids. Systems which are prepared by laser light may exhibit photon echoes, free induction decay (FID), coherent Raman beats and a variety of other optical transient effects which closely parallel the transients of pulsed NMR. Time-dependent interactions involving population and dipole dephasing can be examined in a selective manner and without the influence of Doppler broadening in the case of a gas, or crystalline strain broadening in the case of a solid.
