Abstract

This chapter is intended to present a survey of the free amino acids and related compounds that can be identified and quantitated in human brain and in the brains of commonly used species of laboratory mammals. Even though the word “free” may often be omitted, I refer only to those compounds that are detectable without hydrolysis of brain extracts. N-Acetylated amino acids, for instance, are not considered. For convenience, I have included with the amino acids several amines such as glycerophosphoethanolamine, phosphoethanolamine, and ethanolamine and several small peptides such as GSH, GSSG, and homocarnosine, since these amino compounds are readily measured together with true amino acids by many amino acid analyzer techniques.
