Abstract
Pump-probe experiments are commonly used in quantum optics to determine how the optical properties of a material system are modified by the presence of a strong pump beam. A common example is spectral hole burning within an optical absorption line that is inhomogeneously broadened due to the Doppler effect. Since the pump beam can efficiently saturate only those atoms whose resonance frequency is close to that of the pump laser, the absorption profile for a probe beam will contain a dip at the pump laser frequency.
