Abstract
Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer in American women but their fourth leading cause of cancer death. Ovarian cancer will strike an estimated 1% of women in their lifetime and is usually fatal. Because of the high mortality associated with ovarian cancer, identification of individuals at increased risk is particularly important. Individuals at very high risk due to genetic susceptibility might consider prophylactic oophorectomy to prevent development of ovarian tumors.
