Surface Phenomena in Metallurgical Processes

Abstract

In work concerning the investigation of the phenomenon of contact melting [1–4], it was found that the melting process in the contact zone of two crystals, having a constitutional diagram with a minimum, two stages occur on the liquidus line. The first stage comprises the formation and melting, on the surfaces of the contacting crystals, of solid solutions, saturated at the experimental temperature. This is shown by the results of determinations of the lattice parameters at high temperatures in a mixture of two alkali halide crystals capable of melting in contact [1], and also by the results of an investigation of the interdiffusion of crystals having unlimited solubility in the solid state at temperatures close to the temperature of contact melting [4]. No investigations of this nature have been made for metallic systems.
