Abstract
Although Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most common sexually transmitted pathogens, it is not recognized to be a major cause of upper urinary tract infections (1). It is, however, appropriate to discuss this organism in the context of this symposium because it is an important genital tract pathogen and these infections may be associated with urethral signs and symptoms. The purpose of this review is to briefly discuss those clinical conditions where chlamydial infection of the urinary tract is important and to discuss the currently used diagnostic tests for correctly identifying these infections and how these tests can be used. Some of the newer tests that are appearing with the technologic revolution in diagnostic procedures will also be mentioned.
