Exploding Wires as a Source of X Rays

Exploding Wires

Abstract

The electrical explosion of metallic conductors in vacuum differs in many respects from explosions in gases at atmospheric pressures. The emission of x rays is one* of the distinguishing features of explosions conducted in a vacuum. Diagnosis of the emitted x radiation throws light on the basic processes responsible for the emission, namely, the interaction of strong electric fields with the ionized matter of the exploding conductors. It is the purpose of this work to indicate methods of producing sufficient amounts of x radiation needed for study of these processes, to deduce some of the characteristics of the emitted radiation, and to relate them to the electrical characteristics of the exploding conductors.
