Abstract
Over the past decades renal transplantation has been transformed from an experimental clinical procedure to an established method of treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). From 1975 through 1982 the number of patients suffering from end-stage renal disease doubled in several european countries (Figure 1). According to the registry report at the London Meeting of the European Dialysis and Transplantation Association (EDTA) in 1982, 65,386 patients were treated in Europe with hemodialysis, 6,092 patients with peritoneal dialysis, and 15,318 patients did have a functioning graft (1).
