Abstract

The liver transplant team in Groningen was in 1977 in an embryonic state. In 1978 the first patient was sent abroad to receive a new liver and in 1979 the first orthotopic liver transplantation was performed in an adult. More then three years later a child was transplanted a new liver. In 1983 the first patient from abroad came to receive a new liver in Groningen. By now, 31 orthotopic liver transplantations have been performed.
