Velocity of Indentation as a Variable in Tactile Sensation

Abstract

Most investigators of tactile sensitivity have assumed that one of the static aspects of the tactile stimulating event, pressure (Weber, 1846) or tension (Meissner, 1859; von Frey and Kiesow, (1899) was the relevant metric that best described the relationship between the stimulating event and the resulting sensation. Recently other investigators (e.g., Harrington and Merzenich, 1970; Knibestöl and Vallbo, 1980; Mountcastle and Darian-Smith, 1968) have used skin indentation depth as the appropriate metric to describe tactile stimuli.
