Abstract
The focus of this chapter is on voltage security as a function of ancillary services that can be described in the context of reactive power markets and associated pricing mechanisms. First, an introduction to voltage security and reactive power management is presented and the consequences of recent electricity industry restructuring in the UK are highlighted. Second, an overview of recently developed reactive power markets is presented and several examples are discussed in detail. Finally, several recently developed algorithmic techniques are presented in detail. The techniques will introduce the concepts of transition-optimisation and congestion management in the context of a complete framework for the monitoring, assessment and control of voltage security.
