Abstract
In most contemporary textbooks on the Caribbean, the history of the former Dutch Caribbean1 is only cursorily discussed, if not neglected altogether.2 Linguistic barriers only partially account for this disregard. The less comforting explanation is that the historiography on the Dutch Caribbean is only recently and hesitantly catching up with its Caribbean counterparts.3
