Abstract
The Andosini, a tribe subdued by Hannibal in 218 BC, are the first recorded inhabitants of the Pyrenean state of Andorra. In the 9th century the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles II, reputedly made the bishop of Seo de Urgel overlord of Andorra. The Paréage of 1278 placed Andorra under the joint suzerainty of the bishop of Seo de Urgel and the Comte de Foix. The rights vested in the house of Foix passed by marriage to that of Bearn and, on the accession of Henri IV, to the French crown.
