Abstract

The present volume has achieved one of its aims if it has managed to awaken an enthusiasm not only for travel, but also for accounts of it. With its limited scope, the book was restricted to introducing and illustrating English travel writing in only some of its most important forms. The great variety in which this writing manifests itself can, in part, be attributed to the numerous kinds of journey that have formed its theme and content matter over the centuries: the pilgrimage, mercantile travel, exploration, the Grand Tour, the home tour, the tourist trip, travel to escape from civilization, journeys into the self or journeys for the sake of writing — to name only a few.

The same things every day slowly kill us off. To crave anew, the pleasure of travel helps us to do this.

(Ernst Bloch, 1986, p. 370)
