Abstract

Programmes and Funds. Social and economic development, aimed at achieving a better life for people everywhere, is a major part of the UN system of organizations. At the forefront of efforts to bring about such progress is the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN’s global development network. UNDP works with people at all levels of society to help build nations that can withstand crisis, and drive and sustain the kind of growth that improves the quality of life for everyone. On the ground in 177 countries and territories, it offers a global perspective and a local insight to help empower lives and build resilient nations. In 2010–11, 150 countries were working with UNDP to implement 323 projects representing a total investment of US$5•2bn. in environmental and sustainable development priorities in these countries.
