Abstract
The importance of working in the natural environment of farmers’ fields cannot be overemphasized. Deepwater rice conditions are not easily simulated on an experiment station and the reductionist approach frequendy leads to irrelevant investigation. Research on deepwater rice has suffered badly because much of the work has been carried out on conventional experiment stations far removed from actual field conditions and the realities of subsistence agriculture.
