About this series

Students of literature or history often lack knowledge of the relevant background material behind the topics they study. The aim of the Context and Commentary series is to meet the needs of these students as well as those whose interdisciplinary work may embrace both subjects. Each volume contains selected passages from both the primary and historical documentation of the period and the imaginative literature relating to it. Key passages of prose and poetry are represented and linked by a commentary which sets the material within its broader background. In this way the study of both literature and history is enhanced. '...an intelligent series of background studies.' - British Book News
