About this book

This volume consists of 52 peer-reviewed papers, presented at the International Conference on Sustainable Design and Manufacturing (SDM-19) held in Budapest, Hungary in July 2019. Leading-edge research into sustainable design and manufacturing aims to enable the manufacturing industry to grow by adopting more advanced technologies, and at the same time improve its sustainability by reducing its environmental impact.  The topic includes the sustainable design of products and services; the sustainable manufacturing of all products; energy efficiency in manufacturing; innovation for eco-design; circular economy; industry 4.0; industrial metabolism; automotive and transportation systems. Application areas are wide and varied.  The book will provide an excellent overview of the latest developments in the Sustainable Design and Manufacturing Area.

About the editors

Peter Ball is a Professor of Operations Management at The York Management School, UK. His research focuses on how operations can be designed and improved. Application areas span manufacturing, supply chain and service. Responsible business, environmental sustainability and resource efficiency feature strongly in his work. Peter has published his work in numerous papers globally in journals, conferences and practitioner publications. He is a Chartered Engineer (IET) and Senior Fellow of the UK's Higher Education Academy. 

Luisa Huaccho is a Senior Lecturer in Operations Management at The York Management School. Previously, she was a Lecturer in Operations & Business Processes at the Leeds University Business School. She obtained her D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. She is a co-Track chair of the British Academy of Management, Performance Management Track. She is the Co-Editor for the International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management (IJPPM). She isa member of Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Knowledge and Systems Science (IJKSS). She is a member of the Editorial Review Board for the International Journal of Operations and Production Management (IJOPM). Luisa is a member of the EPSRC Manufacturing Futures Network, British Academy of Management (BAM), European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) and Decision Sciences Institute (DSI).

Robert Howlett is the Executive Chair of KES International, a non-profit organization that facilitates knowledge transfer and the dissemination of research results in areas including Intelligent Systems, Sustainability, and Knowledge Transfer.  He is a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University in the UK. His technical expertise is in the use of intelligent systems to solve industrial problems. He has been successful in applying artificial intelligence, machine learning and related technologies to sustainability and renewable energy systems; condition monitoring, diagnostic tools and systems; and automotive electronics and engine management systems.  His current research work is focussed on the use of smart microgrids to achieve reduced energy costs and lower carbon emissions in areas such as housing and protected horticulture.

Rossi Setchi is a Professor in High-Value Manufacturing, Deputy Head of School, and a Director of Research at the School of Engineering of Cardiff University. She has a distinguished track record of research in a range of areas including AI, robotics, systems engineering, manufacturing, industrial sustainability, cyber-physical systems and Industry 4.0 and, in particular, has built an international reputation for excellence in knowledge-based systems, computational semantics and human-machine systems. She has published over 220 peer-reviewed papers. She is Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the British Computer Society, and a senior member of IEEE. She is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Systems Science and IEEE Access, and a member of the Editorial Board of a number of international journals.
