About this book

The fluidized-bed reactor is the centerpiece of industrial fluidization processes. This book focuses on the design and operation of fluidized beds in many different industrial processes, emphasizing the rationale for choosing fluidized beds for each particular process. The book starts with a brief history of fluidization from its inception in the 1940’s. The authors present both the fluid dynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds and the extensive experimental studies of operating systems and they set them in the context of operating processes that use fluid-bed reactors.
Chemical engineering students and postdocs as well as practicing engineers will find great interest in this book.

About the authors

John G. Yates, Ramsay Memorial Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering at UCL, is one of the pioneers on Particle Technology and is widely recognized especially on the field of fluidized bed applications. He wrote one of the earliest books on the subject in 1983 "Fundamentals of fluidized-bed chemical processes", Butterworth-Heinemann. John G. Yates is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Paola Lettieri, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Vice Dean in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at UCL, heads the fluidization group and is internationally recognized for her expertise on the prediction and control of fluidized beds at process conditions. Recipient of two prestigious fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering, her work has a strong emphasis on industrial applications and has contributed to the development and operation of industrial processes in the petrochemical, chemical, energy-from-waste and nuclear sectors. Prior to her academic career, Paola Lettieri worked in fluidization at the BP Chemicals Research Centre in Sunbury. She is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
