About this book

This book collects selected contributions of the “Optimization and Decision Science - ODS2023” international conference on the theme of optimization in green sustainability and ecological transition. ODS2023 was held in Ischia, 4–7 September 2023, and was organized by AIRO, the Italian Operations Research Society. The book offers new and original contributions on operations research, optimization, decision science, and prescriptive analytics from both a methodological and applied perspectives with a special focus on SDG related topics.

It provides a state-of-the art on problem models and solving methods to address a widely class of real-world problems, arising in different application areas such as logistics, transportation, manufacturing, health, ICT and mobile networks, and emergency/disaster management. In addition, the scientific works collected in this book aim at providing significant contributions in the themes of sustainability, traffic and pollution reductions, and energy management.

This book is aimed primarily at researchers and Ph.D. students in the Operations Research community. However, due to its interdisciplinary contents, this book is of high interest also for students and researchers from other disciplines, including artificial intelligence, computer sciences, finance, mathematics, and engineering as well as for practitioners facing complex decision-making problems in logistics, manufacturing production, and services.

About the editors

Maurizio Bruglieri is Associate Professor of Operations Research at Politecnico di Milano where he teaches Operations Research for different degrees courses since 2005. His main research interests focus on combinatorial optimization and mathematical modeling of optimization problems in the transportation field and in the development of metaheuristic solution methods. He is Author of more than 70 scientific papers including about 40 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals. His publications mainly concern (but are not limited to) the electric car-sharing management (e.g., vehicle relocation problem), the electric/green vehicle routing problem, the hazmat network design, and graph partitioning problems.

Paola Festa obtained her Ph.D. degree in Operations Research in 2000. She is currently Full Professor in Operations Research at the University of Napoli FEDERICO II, where since 2002 she has been teaching Programming (undergraduate degree), Operations Research (undergraduate degree), and Combinatorial Optimization (master’s degree). She is in the scientific committee of the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics and Computer Science (University of Napoli FEDERICO II). She has been in the scientific committee of the Ph.D. Program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (University of Napoli FEDERICO II) and in the scientific committee of the Ph.D. Program in Operations Research (University of Calabria). Since 1999, she has been frequently Research Scholar at several national and international research institutions, including CNRs, MIT Lab for Information and Decision Systems (USA), AT&T Labs Research (USA), and Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of the University of Florida (USA). She is Author/Co-author of more than 100 publications appeared in international journals, books, and peer-reviewed conference proceedings.

Giusy Macrina graduated cum laude in Management Engineering in 2013 at theUniversity of Calabria (UNICAL). She was Visiting Student at the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur les reseaux d'entreprise (CIRRELT) Montréal, and then, she obtained her Ph.D. degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2018 at UNICAL. She is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Energy and Management Engineering at UNICAL. She is Member of the board of AIRO young, the young chapter of the Italian Operations Research Society (AIRO). Her main area of scientific activity is Operations Research, and she focuses on logistics and distribution problems. She is Author of more than 20 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Ornella Pisacane graduated with honors in computer engineering from the Università della Calabria (UNICAL), Italy, in 2004. She received her Ph.D. in Operations Research from UNICAL in 2008 where she was Research Fellow for 5 years. She was Ph.D. Visiting Student in the Département d'Informatique et de Recherche Opérationnelle at the Université de Montréal (Canada), and later, she was Visiting Research Fellow at the Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation (Montréal, Canada). She was Research Fellow in the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione (DII) at the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM). She is currently Assistant Professor at DII (UNIVPM) in Operations Research. She received the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor and as Full Professor in Operations Research. She is also Member of the Doctoral School Committee in Information Engineering of DII (UNIVPM). Her main research interests concern combinatorial optimization as primarily applied to production planning and scheduling, transportation, and mobility. She is Author of more than 40 papers. She was Speaker in many international conferences, and she serves as Referee for many international journals in the field of Operations Research.
