Introduction

The book covers all the important aspects of research methodology, and addresses the specific requirements of engineering students, such as methods and tools, in detail. It also discusses effective research in engineering today, which requires the ability to undertake literature reviews utilizing different online databases, to attribute credit for any prior work mentioned, to respect intellectual property rights while simultaneously maintaining ethics in research, and much more. Further, the book also considers soft skills like research management and planning, dealing with criticism in research and presentation skills, which are all equally important and need to include in research methodology education. Lastly, it provides the technical knowhow needed to file patents in academia, an important area that is often ignored in research methodology books. The book is a particularly valuable resource for PhD students in India and South East Asia, as research methodology is a part of their coursework.

About the authors

Dipankar Deb completed his Ph.D. from University of Virginia, Charlottes ville with Prof.Gang Tao, IEEE Fellow and Professor in the department of ECE in 2007. In 2017, he was elected to be a IEEE Senior Member. He have served as a Lead Engineer at GE Global Research Bengaluru (2012-15) and as an Assistant Professor in EE, IIT Guwahati 2010-12. Presently he is Associate Professor at Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Infrastructure Technology Research and Management. He lead efforts towards innovation. He is a Student Startup and Innovation Project Coordinator at IITRAM. He mentor students to build Intellectual property Rights (Patents).

Rajeeb Dey is presently working with National Institute of Technology, Silchar, Assam, India, as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Before joining NIT Silchar, he has served Sikkim Manipal University, Sikkim, for 12 years in various positions (Lecturer, Reader and Associate Professor). His research interests are time-delay systems and control, robust control, control of biomedical systems and application of wireless communication in control. He is presently reviewer of many SCI(E) journals related to control engineering and applied math-ematics. He is senior member of IEEE, CSS, Life member of System Society of India,Member Institution of Engineers (India).

Valentina Emilia Balas is currently full Professor in the Department of Automatics and Applied Software at the Faculty of Engineering, “Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, Romania. She holds a Ph.D. in Applied Electronics and Telecommunications from Polytechnic University of Timisoara. Dr. Balas is author of more than 250 research papers in refereed journals and International Conferences. Her research interests are in Intelligent Systems, Fuzzy Control, Soft Computing, Smart Sensors,Information Fusion, Modeling and Simulation. She is the Editor-in Chief to International Journal of Advanced Intelligence Paradigms (IJAIP) and to International Journal of Computational Systems Engineering (IJCSysE), member in Editorial Board member of several national and international journals and is thedirector of Intelligent Systems Research Centre in Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad. She is a member of EUSFLAT, SIAM and a Senior Member IEEE, member in TC –Fuzzy Systems (IEEE CIS), member in TC – Emergent Technologies (IEEE CIS),member in TC – Soft Computing (IEEE SMCS).
