About this book
This book results from the XVIII Spanish-French School 'Jacques Louis Lions' on Numerical Simulation in Physics and Engineering, that took place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from 25th to 29th June 2018. These conferences are held biennially since 1984 and sponsored by the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA). They also have the sponsorship of the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) of France since 2008. Each edition is organized around several main courses and talks delivered by renowned French/Spanish scientists. This volume is highly recommended to graduate students in Engineering or Science who want to focus on numerical simulation, either as a research topic or in the field of industrial applications. It can also benefit senior researchers and technicians working in industry who are interested in the use of state-of-the-art numerical techniques. Moreover, the book can be used as a textbook for master courses in Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.

About the editors
David Greiner is Associate Professor at the Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering of University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), and has served as General Chair of the XVIII Spanish-French School “Jacques-Louis Lions” on Numerical Simulation in Physics and Engineering. His main research interests are related with optimum design in engineering. He is also editorial board member for the Mathematics-MDPI and Mathematical Problems in Engineering, journals.
María Isabel Asensio received her PhD in Mathematics from the University of Salamanca, where she is Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Principal Investigator of the Numerical Simulations and Scientific Computation Research Group. Her main research interests concern mathematical modelling of environmental problems with emphasis on forest fire spread, wind field and atmospheric pollutants dispersion.
Rafael Montenegro is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). He was Director of the Mathematic Department and the University Institute SIANI. He is editorial board member of relevant journals and is author of more than 200 scientific publications, mainly in the area of 3-D adaptive finite element mesh generation and its applications to environmental problems. He is currently member of the Managing Board of ECCOMAS in representation of SeMA.
