Introduction

This brief explores several adaptive agricultural practices from around the world to fulfill current and future agricultural demands for food security due to the challenges posed by climate change and growing global population. Readers will discover how farmers adapt to environmental changes by adopting various agronomic practices at crop, farm and landscape levels.  
 
Particular attention is given to systemic and transformational adaptation strategies employed by farmers such as mulching, organic farming and crop diversification.  This is a highly informative and carefully presented book that provides insights on how crops can build up resilience against periods of drought, high salinity, disasters such as floods, and diseases. About the authors

Dr. Pradeep Kumar Dubey is a senior research fellow in the Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, India. He received his bachelors in Botany, Chemistry and Zoology from Kamla Nehru Institute of Physical and Social Sciences, and masters in Environmental Sciences from Banaras Hindu University, and he is currently pursuing his PhD in Environmental Science and Technology at Banaras Hindu University. His main research interests include climate resilient agriculture, sustainable agriculture, resource conservation techniques, food security, and adaptive agricultural practices. He is a member of the Agro-ecosystem Specialist Group of Commission on Ecosystem Management, IUCN; Managing Editor of Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability and a regular reviewer for many international journals.


Dr. Gopal Shankar Singh is a professor in Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, India and leading the Department and Faculty of Environment & Sustainable Development in the capacity of Head and Dean. He completed his masters from BHU and PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His research interest includes natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, traditional ecological knowledge, ethnobotany, climate change, watershed management, sustainable development and bridging the gaps of natural sciences with social sciences component since last twenty five years. He is an expert member of several national and international scientific committees including UN-IPBES.


Dr. P.C. Abhilash is a senior assistant professor of sustainability science in the Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and Chair of the Agroecosystem Specialist Group of IUCN-Commission on Ecosystem Management. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) and his latest research interest includes land degradation and restoration, adaptive land management, nature-based solutions, climate resilient agriculture, indigenous and local knowledge (ILK), and ecosystem-based approaches for managing agrobiodiversity for food and nutritional security. He is an expert member of four IUCN commissions (CEM, CEC, SSC, & CEESP), IUCN Task Force on Oil Palm & Biodiversity, UN-FAO, UN-IPBES, UNDP-BES Network, UNFCCD, APN and International Resource Panel of UNEP. He is also serving the editorial board of Agronomy, Biodegradation, Biomass & Bioenergy, Energy, Ecology & Environment, Environmental Management, Land Degradation & Development, Land, Restoration Ecology, Sustainable Earth, and Tropical Ecology.
