Abstract
A thermotropic two-band model is proposed for the fuel combustion in an internal combustion engine. In the model, the nonequilibrium combustion process is represented by three interrelated equilibrium processes within a complex thermodynamic system. This provides a better approximation of the mean values and local values of the gas than in traditional thermodynamic approaches. Since this method is consistent with traditional thermodynamics and mathematically simple, it may be used for teaching purposes at universities.
