Abstract

Neuroprotection is currently one of the hottest topics in biomedical research. Investigators worldwide are examining ways to prevent the spread of nerve damage following, for example, stroke, traumatic brain injury or epileptic seizures. It is less well known that neuroprotection is also probably the most exciting area in glaucoma research, delegates were told at the International Glaucoma Symposium [ Jerusalem, Israel; March 1998 ]. Not only does research into neuroprotection offer new therapeutic targets, it helps differentiate conventional treatments and begins to answer some of the clinical conundrums surrounding this disabling disease.
