Abstract

The role of aciclovir as the mainstay of treatment for genital herpes is being brought into question as researchers gain greater experience with the newer antiviral agents famciclovir and valaciclovir. These new agents have the advantage of greater oral bioavailability than aciclovir. Other treatments for genital herpes are also under investigation, including the use of capsaicin analogues and vaccine immunotherapy. The opinions of several leading researchers on these topics were presented at a satellite symposium sponsored by SmithKline Beecham, and during other sessions held at the International Congress of Infectious Disease [ Hong Kong; June 1996 ].
